Scotch & Soda

It is rare I find quality clothes for little boys.  Scotch Shrunk is one of the few exceptions.

Children should possess a strong sense of self, even in the wee moments of their lives.

Life beyond 140-characters

Twitter. Facebook. Tumbler. Blogger. Pinterest. Whatever else there is out there. Lives on the internet, for anyone to see ... see how interesting we are, how smart we are, how witty ... oh, and how pretty. Gag. Okay, but seriously, it is pretty sickening. And sad. A generation so full of itself and simultaneously, so empty.

If my 15 year-old self could have seen the future, she would be most shocked by the grown-ups.  Shocked in seeing women and men spend hours of their day writing senselessly on the internet about themselves? She would wonder if some major catastrophe occurred.  Why does so much of what comprises "life" consist of a screen, keyboard, touchpad?  She would be disappointed in this generation of grown-ups, in its lack of regard for others.  How easy it is to ridicule former/current friends, bosses, clients, presidents, etc....  How easy it is to sit behind a plastic screen and type in words they would never dare say to the person's face.  Land of the vile, home of the cowardly.  That's exactly what the 15 year-old in me would think.

But thankfully, she grew up.  She stopped thinking so concretely.  And through various people, interactions and experiences, she was able to see the world wasn't all horrible.  In the midst of the clutter, still anchored in adolescent ideology, she made her own future.   A future in which love, kindness, and hope are regular visitors.  She sees it in the children's faces.  So innocent and so unmarred by the knowledge that comes with age.

Vionnet Autumn/Winter 2011

So lady-like. The metallic blue lace piece w/ black pleated side panels is beyond gorgeous.

Balmain Resort RTW 2012

Fresh.

I know, I know, it appears I have skipped over this fall/winter.  But I just think these are so lovely and wearable and I want them all.  Note the subtle slouch ... gives something potentially uptight some relaxation.

Loco for Local?

Shop local, eat local, buy local.  We are inundated with this message.  But why?  Supporting the local economy, etc..., is one thing, guilting/beating people over the head with the message, is another.  What's even more annoying is seeing these people tote it around town, while driving their foreign cars.

And why is "local" necessarily better?  I have been to several local restaurants and stores that are just ho hum, but are doing quite well economically.  Some that are great, but weren't supported by this city (so sad when French Pharmacie, the store, closed down).

I would rather shop what is great, eat what is great, and buy what is great.  That's the beauty of a free market and having competition.  As consumers, we can choose.  And I, personally, am a fan of German automobiles.

Gravity

I hope she knows you only like the beginnings of things.

Faye to Don, Mad Men, Season 4

It doesn't really take any work, kinda like gravity.  Attraction--it's so easy.  Not just attraction to people, but to ideas, aesthetics, music ... musicians (okay, okay, musicians are people).  But what I'm attempting to say is, "liking the beginnings" is built into our genetic make-up.  I can't explain it other than ... YSL heels ... these beautifully crafted wonders that open up my wallet quite effortlessly.  I wear them and feel so pretty.  But, they eventually lose some of their shine, just in time for next season's brand new crop of decadence to accompany my perfect pedicure and the urge to reopen my wallet.  Cycle.

So, we know it's connected to feelings.  You know, FEELINGS ... finicky and fleeting.   Relationships, shoes, feelings ... here's to "liking the beginnings of things."  Cheers.

Mean Girls (or Boys)

Ok, I am going to touch on this hopefully just once, but who knows.

Here goes ... constantly posting pictures of your new larger than life diamonds, cars, watches, houses, etc ..., is just tacky and telling.  No one really cares.  No one really is that happy for you.  Because inside everyone's head, there is this thought --->  "Wow.  He/she must have not received enough attention as a kid, so now we all have to suffer for it.  Where's the 'hide' button?"

I like pretty things too.  But if you only feel good when making superficial and insignificant attempts to elevate yourself above another, it's just mean (and petty) ... makes me think you're like my 4 year old, when he was 3.  BUT, even he knows better.

Oh, and one other thing.  Mean girls are never pretty and always finish last.  If you have to put down another girl because some boy ignores you or has moved on, it's pretty sad.  It's not her fault.  It's probably your fault ... because you're mean.

Not a Review, Just Love of 2 Films

I just finished watching The American, again.  Loved it even more this time around. Minutes in, the cinematography captivates by appealing to my aesthetics.  Whenever I can hit the mental "pause button," and each scene becomes the perfect still, I add the movie to my "favorites" list.  You can do that throughout this entire film.  I also relish in the tension and slow build-up ... but apparently this was too slow for some.  My first time seeing this in the theater, movie goers started yawning, getting antsy, and even walked out?  Huh?  I get it, but so sad.  Though, in actuality, there is nothing American about The American.  People here have grown so accustomed to being fed the typical Hollywood actions/thrillers.  They had no idea what to do with this gem, directed by the super talented Anton Corbijn.

I am also a fan of Control.  Again, another character study.  More dialogue and less silence in this film, but altogether, still leaving me captivated by the beauty of each scene.  Plus, Joy Division ... who doesn't love them?  And Ian Curtis, flawed genius.  Okay.  Yes, Anton Corbijn ... he's pretty great.  And after watching his movies, you can tell he is also a photographer, right?  Right.  I'm tired.  It's late.  I need to go to bed.

See both, if you haven't already.

Hello 2011

I'm so glad 2010 is in my rearview mirror.  Not to say I didn't enjoy it, on the contrary, as it contains some of the best moments of my life.  I'm just ready for the new.  What goals will this year hold?  Well, it's not exhaustive, but certainly hopeful....

I'm saving most of my free time for only people I like or just myself.  It seems selfish, but I don't think I can fake a smile to combat the awkwardness anymore.  Small talk makes me internally cringe, especially with people possessing the emotional aptitudes of 3 year olds.  I'm drawn to the genuine, kind, and purposeful.  Hopefully, simultaneously avoiding the fakes out there.  I may not become popular, but at least forgo pandering at the masses.  Life is too valuable, why would I want to dilute it?  Certain people attempt to convince and conjure up all kinds of nonsense not worth acknowledging.  Sift through the noise, and maybe begin to hear truth again.

Secondly, I want to ... hmmm.  Don't know yet.  I think I will start with just the first goal.  It seems heavy already, as everything is easier said than done,  and I am such a creature of habit.
