Loco for Local?

Shop local, eat local, buy local.  We are inundated with this message.  But why?  Supporting the local economy, etc..., is one thing, guilting/beating people over the head with the message, is another.  What's even more annoying is seeing these people tote it around town, while driving their foreign cars.

And why is "local" necessarily better?  I have been to several local restaurants and stores that are just ho hum, but are doing quite well economically.  Some that are great, but weren't supported by this city (so sad when French Pharmacie, the store, closed down).

I would rather shop what is great, eat what is great, and buy what is great.  That's the beauty of a free market and having competition.  As consumers, we can choose.  And I, personally, am a fan of German automobiles.

Gravity

I hope she knows you only like the beginnings of things.

Faye to Don, Mad Men, Season 4

It doesn't really take any work, kinda like gravity.  Attraction--it's so easy.  Not just attraction to people, but to ideas, aesthetics, music ... musicians (okay, okay, musicians are people).  But what I'm attempting to say is, "liking the beginnings" is built into our genetic make-up.  I can't explain it other than ... YSL heels ... these beautifully crafted wonders that open up my wallet quite effortlessly.  I wear them and feel so pretty.  But, they eventually lose some of their shine, just in time for next season's brand new crop of decadence to accompany my perfect pedicure and the urge to reopen my wallet.  Cycle.

So, we know it's connected to feelings.  You know, FEELINGS ... finicky and fleeting.   Relationships, shoes, feelings ... here's to "liking the beginnings of things."  Cheers.
